Other contactless payment options

All BGL BNP Paribas bank cards offer contactless payment. With these cards, you can make payments without inserting your card into the payment terminal.
In Luxembourg, you can make contactless payments for any amount. For purchases:
- of less than EUR 50*, you won’t need to enter your PIN;
- of more than EUR 50*, you’ll be asked to enter your PIN.
To make a contactless payment, simply hold your bank card over the payment terminal. The recommended distance is 3-4 centimetres.
Once the payment is approved, the connection with the terminal is instantly interrupted.
You can use contactless payments in all shops that display the contactless logo on their payment terminals.
Fast, simple and secure
Contactless payment is an innovation solution. It makes paying:
A secure solution
Contactless payments are also extremely secure. You must systematically confirm any purchase over EUR 50 by entering your PIN, as you would for standard payments.
Whenever you make several small contactless purchases in a row, a secondary EUR 100 cap protects you. Above this amount, you’ll need to insert your card into the terminal and enter your PIN to confirm any subsequent transactions. This means that it is only used for small amounts.
Finally, in the event of fraudulent use of your card, you’re protected by the same guarantees that apply to standard payments.
Contactless payments also reduce the risk of fraud via “shoulder surfing”.
In these situations, the scammer looks over your shoulder to find out your PIN. With contactless, it’s impossible for nearby fraudsters to steal your PIN, as you no longer have to enter it to confirm small purchases.
This payment method is based on Near Field Communication technology (NFC). This technology is used for more than just payment cards.
It is also used for transport tickets, access cards and car keys. At some festivals, you might be given a bracelet with an NFC chip to make contactless food and drink payments.
