Childcare

Before school age

with crèches – both public and private – being the most common type of childcare provider. All regions of the country offer crèche facilities, whether private or government-funded. With government-funded crèches, priority is normally given to local residents and children with two working parents. Private crèches account for the majority of availability. Should you decide to move to Luxembourg, you are sure to find a crèche close to where you live or work. Indeed, many new crèches have opened in recent years near people's workplaces. This can be a very practical solution if you wish to continue breastfeeding your child after going back to work, for example.

School-aged children

If your children have already started school, a day-care centre can look after them outside school hours and during the holidays. These facilities take children from the ages of 3 or 4 up to 12 years old. As well as providing care and supervision for your child, these institutions offer help with homework, educational activities and in most cases meals, too. After-school care centres can be found in all Luxembourg municipalities and they provide exactly the same type of services as day-care centres. As municipal institutions, however, they prioritise families who live locally and children who attend school in the municipality.

Good to know

Luxembourg law states that women who work full-time have the right to two 45-minute breastfeeding breaks per day, provided they submit a written request to their employer.

Maybe you'd prefer a more personalised childcare solution? As well as traditional crèches, Luxembourg offers: a system of parental assistants, who can take up to 5 children at a time, including no more than two children under the age of 2.

If you don't want a group-based solution for your child, you could instead opt for or a home-based nanny or au pair.

Reduced-cost childcare with Chèque-Service Accueil

You can benefit from subsidised childcare by choosing a government-accredited childcare facility that is certified as a "Chèque-Service Accueil" (CSA) provider – whether it's a public or private crèche, day-care centre, after-school centre or nursery.

Children ages 1 to 4 can receive 20 hours of free multilingual childcare per week, with up to 30 hours provided in the case of low-income families. Children ages 4 to 12 who are attending primary school can also benefit from totally free wraparound care (including five free meals) during term time, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. Outside these hours, and during the school holidays, parents contribute financially based on their income and the CSA scales.

Activities for children

Nature activities for children

Once you have relocated to Luxembourg, you will be able to explore the very wide range of nature-related activities on offer. In particular, you'll be able to enjoy the impressive playgrounds provided by numerous municipalities throughout the country. Check out the Spillplaz.lu app, where you can search by post code or town as well as other criteria, such as facilities for children under 3 years of age, covered play areas or dining facilities nearby. This app is available in four languages: English, French, German and Luxembourgish. Information is also provided at www.spillplaz.lu. Luxembourg lends itself in particular to beautiful walks in the woods, along the banks of the Mosel, or around one of the lakes. Lakes Remerschen, Haute-Sûre and Echternach are among the most popular and can easily be combined with other activities such as adventure parks.

Sports for children

Once you have relocated to Luxembourg, you will be able to explore all the sports available close to where you live and in neighbouring municipalities. The large number of state-of-the-art swimming pools, sports centres and other facilities spread around the country are aimed at promoting physical activity from a very early age. Luxembourg also has a vast network of cycle paths, where you can take your kids for a completely safe ride.

Cultural activities for children

Great importance is likewise attached to musical education. Lessons may be given in local or regional schools of music and conservatoires. Generally speaking, lessons are free from a very young age (4 upwards) up to the first-cycle diploma (or equivalent), for all children and young people up to age 18. For art lovers, Luxembourg's museums are a must. Most of them offer activities specifically designed for children: MUDAM offers guided tours for children, Casino Luxembourg – Forum d'art contemporain organises guided tours and workshops for children and young people, while the National Museum of History and Art holds creative workshops for children. In addition, the Luxembourg City Tram and Bus Museum and Vitarium offer tours specifically designed for families.

Adventure parks

Although Luxembourg doesn't have any major theme parks, there are plenty of great surprises in store at its adventure parks. In the south of the country, Parc Le'h Adventures– with its monkey bridges, ziplines and ropes courses, and even a "Bambini" circuit for the very young – is the perfect choice. Located near the border with Belgium, the Steinfort Adventure park offers 10 circuits of varying degrees of difficulty. For families that like to take things at a slightly more relaxed pace, the Parc Merveilleux de Bettembourg has plenty of attractions and is a great venue for a day out. Getting up close and personal with animals from five different continents is an experience not to be missed!

Children's health

In Luxembourg, the majority of costs are reimbursed by the national health fund (Caisse nationale de santé – CNS). Consultation and hospitalisation costs are 88% refunded for adults and 100% for children under 18. Although it's a generous system that provides proper care, not all costs are covered (e.g. dental and optical, single rooms in hospitals). Supplementary health insurance policies are used to cover these charges.

Bon à savoir

Any minor or child under 30 years of age who is a Luxembourg resident and is not a member of the CNS in their own right can take advantage of their parent's membership of the health insurance scheme.

You don't have to pay up front for drugs, hospital stays, physical therapy or laboratory fees (third-party payment system) and will only have to pay the portion not covered by health insurance. You do have to pay for doctor visits; however, the cost will subsequently be refunded to you by the CNS.

Luxembourg has often proved a popular destination for families who decided to relocate there. Parents are attracted by its multilingual education system, state-of-the-art infrastructure – both schools and extra-curricular activities – as well as numerous activities provided free of charge.

Whatever the destination, however, it's important to bear in mind that relocating always has an emotional and psychological impact on a child. So, prepare accordingly
by discussing things with your children – before, during and after the move.
