Moving to Luxembourg? In most cases, you’ll need a current account with a Luxembourg bank fairly quickly.

You can open an account before arriving, as soon as you have your employment contract.

You can start your application online or by emailing expat@bgl.lu, stating your arrival date.

What you’ll need to open an account online

Opening an account (even online) requires a little paperwork/some specific documents. Get a head start on your online application by preparing the documents you’ll need in advance.

Scan or take a photo of your supporting documents(1):

  • a valid form of ID;
  • your employment contract or a recent payslip, proof of income or a certificate of school attendance;
  • proof of address: certificate of residence (dated within the last three months), electricity, gas or water bill, home insurance certificate, or landline bill (dated within the last three months);
  • your tax number;
Don’t worry if you’re unable to send us your documents! Set up an appointment with an adviser directly at one of our branches. After the appointment and once you have provided the supporting documents, the account opening can be approved.

Are you new to Luxembourg?

Are you preparing to move but haven’t got a place to live yet? These documents can be used instead of a proof of address:

  • a declaration of arrival with a residence permit;
  • a certificate of accommodation(2).

Under certain conditions, you can obtain a rental guarantee from BGL BNP Paribas without a deposit (up to EUR 5,000). This means there’s nothing to pay up front(3).

Digital identification

    Can I open an online account if I’m already a client with the bank?

    Only new BGL BNP Paribas clients can open an online current account. For all existing clients, your account manager will be happy to answer all your questions.

    You must be at least 18 years old to open an online current account.

    With your online current account, you can open one or more current accounts in any of the 11 currencies on offer.

    Can I open an account if I live in a hotel, airbnb or flatshare?

    If you live in a hotel or similar, the following additional documents (non-exhaustive list) must be provided:

    • Your residence permit, or a certificate such as the déclaration d’arrivée d’un ressortissant de pays tiers pour un séjour de plus de 3 mois (declaration of arrival of a third-country national, for a stay of more than three months);
    • An invoice from the hotel where you are living;
    • Proof of accommodation;
    • A certificate of accommodation.

(1) The personal data contained in the documents sent to BGL BNP Paribas will be processed by the bank, in its capacity as controller, for the purpose of processing your application to open an account in accordance with pre-contractual measures. It will also be processed in accordance with our client due diligence measures, based on our legal and regulatory obligations.
If an account is not opened, this data may be kept for 10 years in accordance with our legal obligations. If an account is opened, this data will be kept for a maximum period of 10 years from the end of the contractual relationship.

(2) If you live in a hotel or similar, the following additional documents (non-exhaustive list) must be provided:

An invoice from the hotel where you are living;

a copy of the ID of the person hosting you.
